I am a historian of medicine and science in the History Department at the University of Warwick. The inquiry into one’s own humanity and the question how it relates to the humanity of others in society has always been crucial to both my personal life and my work as a historian. One’s lived experience, I believe, enriches and guides all research.
Do I believe that today’s debates over what it means to be human are superior to those in the past? Are we finally close to solving the riddle, once and for all? As a historian, I seriously doubt it. But it is fascinating to observe that we continue to be as obsessed with the question of our humanity as our ancestors were with theirs.
